NorthSec 2027: 2026 Aftermovie, New Dates, CTF Format Changes and More

It’s been a few months since NorthSec 2026 wrapped up, but the team is already hard at work preparing the 2027 edition! Before the official announcements roll out, here’s where things stand. 👇

🚩 CTF Format Changes for 2027

Big news for 2027: the CTF is splitting into two separate scoreboards.

  • Regular CTF: same challenges, but AI can’t be fed CTF-specific information (text, images, or files from the forums or the CTF itself). Asking an LLM "what are password reset vulnerabilities?" is fine; having it analyze actual challenge code is not.
  • AI CTF: unrestricted use of LLMs and AI tools, with dynamic scoring where earlier flag submissions earn bonuses and point values decrease over time.

Both tracks share the same challenges, with a maximum team size of eight. The Regular CTF remains the "primary" track: it better preserves community spirit, challenge quality, and competitive integrity, since the same challenge can’t always satisfy human and AI solvers equally well.

🕵️ Did You Know? The Characters of the CTF

What sets NorthSec’s CTF apart is the care we put into its narrative theme: every edition takes place in a cohesive universe, with its own characters and its own story. For 2026, NorthSec’s solarpunk universe was home to a crew of guardians protecting the electronic infrastructure. Here’s a peek:

The characters of NorthSec's 2026 CTF

🎨 Illustration: Claire Deberle

  • Milo - the group’s "leader," even though the guardians don’t believe in leaders. Calm and steady, she’s the liaison to the Community Alliance and is just starting to realize the fight is more complex than she was told.
  • BingBong - a renegade electrical engineer who uses a wheelchair, quick with a joke, and convinced everyone should understand the systems in place.
  • WoonderK1nd - the youngest and most curious of the group, raised by hacker parents. Opportunistic and distrustful of authority, he sees himself as Milo’s second in command.
  • Axolotzl - a shy guardian on the surface, but a different person entirely behind a keyboard: brash, provocative, and secretly dedicated to burning it all down for the cause.

That’s the kind of narrative depth we’re building for the 2027 CTF universe. Stay tuned, more to come soon!
